The 1864 $500 Confederate States of America note, Criswell T-64, is the rarest and most coveted denomination in all of Confederate currency. Issued on February 17, 1864: just fourteen months before the Confederacy's collapse: the T-64 was printed in limited quantities and saw almost no actual circulation. The vast majority of surviving examples were simply never spent, yet even so, Choice Uncirculated survivors are genuinely scarce after 160 years.
The obverse design is among the most dramatic in American numismatic history. At left, a bold vignette depicts an equestrian figure beneath the "DEO VINDICE" (God Will Vindicate) seal: the official motto of the Confederate States of America. At right, a commanding portrait of General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, the Confederacy's most celebrated military hero, who had been killed at Chancellorsville the previous year. The bold script reads: "Will pay to the bearer on demand FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS: Richmond, Feby 17th, 1864." The note was printed by Keatinge & Ball of Columbia, South Carolina, the primary Confederate currency printer during the final years of the war.
Serial number 33712, plate position B, with the hand-signed signatures of the Register and Treasurer. The reverse is unprinted: standard for Confederate currency of this period.
