This note is the epitome of why it's termed a "RAINBOW" note: beautiful and magnificent green, blue, and red colors which stand out amid large and generous margins with razor sharp corners. This note has it all. PMG has only graded 11 notes in the 66 EPQ grade with only 3 notes graded higher. One of the finest available if not the finest in this grade, and with a great provenance from the Siesta Collection.
The 1869 $5 Legal Tender Note is nicknamed the "Woodchopper" note for the vignette on the reverse depicting a pioneer chopping wood: one of the most iconic and beloved reverse designs in all of American paper money. The obverse features a portrait of Andrew Jackson at left and a pioneering scene at right, with a bold Large Red Seal.
"Rainbow" notes refer to the spectacular multicolor toning that develops on well-preserved examples of this era: the combination of green, blue, and red inks creates a stunning visual effect that makes these notes among the most visually striking pieces in American numismatics.
