About This Note

The coin you see here is the exact coin you will receive.

Beautiful frosty blast white MS65 with a slight scuff on the reverse.

The 1879-S Morgan Dollar is the benchmark gem of the entire Morgan series. When collectors and dealers talk about what a blast white, frosty, fully struck Morgan Dollar should look like, they are describing the 1879-S. The San Francisco Mint was the finest striking facility in the United States Mint system: the die preparation was careful, the planchet quality was high, and the results speak for themselves. Blast white cartwheel luster, sharp devices, clean fields. That is the 1879-S.

This example is graded MS65 by PCGS: gem uncirculated quality, with strong luster, a well-struck coin, and only minor contact marks that are not distracting to the naked eye. The obverse is exceptional. The reverse has a slight scuff, honestly disclosed by the seller and noted on the PCGS label. It does not affect the gem designation, and it does not affect the visual impact of the obverse, which is the face of the coin you see when it is displayed.

The 1879-S is the second year of the Morgan Dollar series, struck just two years after George T. Morgan's design debuted in 1878. At $275, this is the most accessible gem-quality Morgan Dollar in the series: a coin that belongs in every collection, from the first-time buyer to the seasoned numismatist who wants a clean, honest, PCGS-certified gem at a fair price.

San Francisco Mint. .900 fine silver, 26.73 grams. PCGS MS65, Cert #84169706.
