Why This Item Is Special

  • PCGS MS66+ · Cert #51652467: the "+" star designation means this coin grades at the very top of the MS66 tier, approaching MS67 quality; a genuine condition rarity in any date, extraordinary in a toned CC Morgan
  • 8/High 7 Variety (VAM): the 8 in the date was punched over a previously engraved High 7, creating a doubled date visible under magnification; a recognized variety that adds numismatic significance beyond the base date
  • Fiery orange and sea-green toning: the obverse blazes with a fiery orange and golden amber center that transitions through russet and copper to electric sea-green and teal at the rim; original, natural color developed over nearly 150 years
  • Carson City Mint · "CC" mint mark above ONE DOLLAR on reverse · .900 fine silver · 26.73 grams · George T. Morgan design
  • The 1880-CC is one of the most popular dates in the Carson City Morgan series: the combination of a recognized VAM variety, MS66+ grade, and monster original toning makes this an extraordinary trophy coin
  • Both sides show original, natural toning: the reverse displays warm golden and cream tones with sea-green at the rim, perfectly complementing the dramatic obverse colors

About This Note

The coin you see here is the exact coin you will receive.

Look at that obverse. Fiery orange and golden amber blazing at the center, transitioning through russet and copper across the devices, then exploding into electric sea-green and teal at the rim. That is 145 years of natural, original toning on a coin that has never been cleaned, never been dipped, never been touched. PCGS graded it MS66+: the "+" star designation means it sits at the very top of the MS66 tier, approaching MS67 quality: and the color is exactly what you see in the photographs.

The 8/High 7 variety adds another layer of significance. In 1880, the Carson City Mint used a working die on which the 8 in the date was punched over a previously engraved High 7: the underlying 7 is visible under magnification, creating a doubled date that variety collectors specifically seek. This is not just a toned MS66+ 1880-CC Morgan Dollar. It is a recognized VAM variety with monster original color.

The reverse is equally beautiful. Warm golden and cream tones cover the eagle, the legend, and the fields, with sea-green appearing at the rim: a perfect complement to the dramatic obverse. The "CC" mint mark sits above ONE DOLLAR, exactly where Carson City collectors want to see it.

The 1880-CC was struck during the height of the Nevada silver boom, when the Carson City Mint was processing enormous quantities of Comstock Lode silver into Morgan Dollars. Carson City coins are prized above all other mint marks in the Morgan series: the frontier mint history, the "CC" mark, and the consistently superior strike quality make them the most collected and most coveted of all Morgan Dollars.

This one has the variety. This one has the grade. This one has the color. There is nothing else to say.

Carson City Mint. .900 fine silver, 26.73 grams. PCGS MS66+, Cert #51652467.
