The 1884-CC Morgan Dollar in NGC MS 66+ DPL is, without exaggeration, a 1-in-a-million coin. The "+" designation means this example grades at the very top of the MS66 tier: approaching MS67 quality: and the DPL (Deep Proof-Like) designation means the fields are mirror-polished to a depth of at least six inches of reflectivity. The combination of MS66+, DPL, and Carson City origin places this coin in a population that can be counted on one hand.
DPL Morgan Dollars are created when a freshly polished die strikes a coin early in its production run, before the mirror finish on the die begins to wear away. The result is a business-strike coin with fields that look like a proof: jet-black mirrors that reflect everything around them, with frosted, heavily detailed devices standing in brilliant cameo contrast. Most Morgan Dollars never achieve even a single inch of reflectivity. Six inches: the DPL threshold: is extraordinary. This coin exceeds it.
The 1884-CC is one of the most treasured dates in the Morgan Dollar series. The Carson City Mint operated in Nevada from 1870 to 1893, striking coins for the booming silver economy of the American West. Carson City Morgans are prized for their frontier mint history, their consistently superior strike quality compared to Philadelphia and New Orleans issues, and the "CC" mint mark that collectors have coveted for over a century.
The obverse presents Liberty's head facing left, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a cotton and wheat wreath. E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs above in a ribbon. Thirteen stars surround the portrait: seven to the left, six to the right. The date 1884 appears at the bottom. The reverse shows the heraldic eagle with spread wings, arrows and olive branch in its talons, shield on its breast, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / ONE DOLLAR surrounding the design. The "CC" mint mark appears above the DO in DOLLAR.
