The 1899 $1 Silver Certificate is universally known as the "Black Eagle" note: one of the most beloved and visually stunning designs in all of American paper money. The obverse features a magnificent spread eagle soaring over the U.S. Capitol dome as its central vignette, flanked by portraits of Abraham Lincoln at lower left and Ulysses S. Grant at lower right. The bold blue serial number, ornate scroll work, and large blue seal complete a design that collectors have treasured for over a century.
The reverse is printed in rich green ink with elaborate lathe work surrounding the central "ONE DOLLAR" and "SILVER CERTIFICATE" legends: a fitting complement to the dramatic obverse.
Fr #226a identifies this as the Lyons-Roberts signature combination with the date printed below the eagle: one of the most collected varieties of this iconic type. This example grades PCGS Banknote GEM UNC 66 PPQ: Premium Paper Quality confirmed. The note displays vibrant original colors, sharp corners, and strong embossing throughout.
Silver Certificates were redeemable in silver dollars at the Treasury and circulated widely in everyday commerce. The "Black Eagle" design was issued from 1899 through 1923, making it one of the longest-running large-size note designs ever produced.
