An exceptional note in every regard. The 1899 $5 Silver Certificate is universally known as the "Chief" note for its stunning central portrait of Running Antelope (Tatonka Iyotake), a Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux chief, rendered in exquisite detail by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing engravers.
The obverse design is among the most striking in all of American paper money: the large central portrait of Running Antelope in full headdress, flanked by bold blue "FIVE" overprints and intricate scroll work, creates a visual impact that few notes can match. The reverse features an ornate green design centered on a large "V" surrounded by elaborate lathe work.
This example grades PCGS Banknote GEM UNC 66 PPQ: Exceptional Paper Quality confirmed. The note displays razor-sharp corners, vibrant colors, and strong embossing throughout, exactly what you'd expect from a top-tier certified example of this beloved type.
