The 1923 $1 Silver Certificate is affectionately known among collectors as the "Horse Blanket": a nod to its large format compared to the small-size notes that replaced it in 1929. It holds the distinction of being the last large-size $1 note ever issued by the United States, making it one of the most popular and widely collected type notes in American paper money.
The obverse features a bold portrait of George Washington at center, flanked by large blue serial numbers and a prominent blue seal. The design is clean and commanding: a fitting final statement for the large-size era. The reverse is printed in rich green ink with ornate lathe work surrounding the central "ONE DOLLAR" and "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" legends.
Fr #237 identifies this as the Speelman-White signature combination, the most common variety of this type and the ideal choice for a type set. This example grades PCGS Banknote Choice AU 58 PPQ: Premium Paper Quality confirmed. The note retains strong original paper quality, vibrant colors, and only the lightest evidence of handling consistent with its About Uncirculated grade.
Silver Certificates were redeemable in silver dollars at the Treasury and circulated widely in everyday commerce through the early 20th century.
