Why This Item Is Special

  • PCGS MS64 · Cert #44089705: an exceptional grade for one of the most elusive dates in the Peace Dollar series
  • 1928-S: the key date of the San Francisco Peace Dollars; mintage of only 1,632,000, the second-lowest in the entire series behind only the 1921
  • San Francisco Mint · "S" mint mark below eagle on reverse · .900 fine silver · 26.73 grams
  • Blast white and extremely lustrous: exceptional surface preservation for a coin that typically shows heavy bag marks and weak strikes
  • The 1928-S is notoriously difficult to find fully struck with original white luster; most examples show flat hair detail and dull, baggy surfaces
  • Designed by Anthony de Francisci: Liberty modeled after his wife Teresa; the reverse eagle perched on a mountain crag holding an olive branch symbolizes peace after World War I
  • A genuine condition rarity in the Peace Dollar series: the combination of low mintage, typical strike weakness, and heavy bag marks makes MS64 blast white examples extremely scarce

About This Note

The coin you see here is the exact coin you will receive.

The 1928-S Peace Dollar is one of the most sought-after dates in the entire Peace Dollar series: a genuine key date with a mintage of only 1,632,000, the second-lowest in the series behind only the inaugural 1921 High Relief. Finding one in PCGS MS64 with blast white, lustrous surfaces is a significant achievement.

The 1928-S is notorious among Peace Dollar specialists for two reasons: its low mintage and its typical strike quality. Most examples from the San Francisco Mint that year came out of the bags with flat hair detail on Liberty, weak eagle feathers on the reverse, and heavy contact marks from bag-to-bag handling. A blast white, well-struck MS64 example is a coin that most collectors will search for years without finding.

The obverse presents Liberty's head facing right, crowned with a radiant diadem of tall spiked rays, with flowing hair rendered in fine detail. IN GOD WE TRVST (using the archaic "V" for "U") flanks the neck, and the date 1928 appears at the bottom. The designer's initial "F" for Anthony de Francisci appears at the base of the neck truncation.

The reverse shows the American bald eagle perched on a mountain crag, facing right, clutching an olive branch in its talons: the symbol of peace that gives the series its name. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM arc above; ONE DOLLAR flanks the eagle; PEACE is inscribed on the rock below. The "S" mint mark appears below the eagle. A radiating sunburst fills the background.

San Francisco Mint. .900 fine silver, 26.73 grams. PCGS MS64, Cert #44089705. Blast white surfaces with strong cartwheel luster. An exceptional coin for the date: lustrous, well-struck, and a genuine condition rarity in the Peace Dollar series.
