Pickens County, GA

Pickens County was formed in 1853 from portions of Cherokee and Gilmer counties and named for General Andrew Pickens, the South Carolina Revolutionary War hero who commanded militia forces at the Battle of Cowpens. Jasper, the county seat, sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Etowah River corridor, and the county's early economy was built on subsistence farming, timber, and the remarkable marble deposits that would define the region's industrial identity for more than a century. The earliest coins to circulate in Pickens County were Capped Bust and Seated Liberty pieces brought by settlers moving north from the Georgia Piedmont, and the obsolete banknotes issued by Georgia's antebellum banks served as the primary paper currency before the Civil War disrupted the financial system entirely.

The Georgia Marble Company, organized in 1884, transformed Pickens County from a quiet agricultural community into one of the most significant quarrying centers in the United States. The Cherokee marble quarried from the hills around Jasper is a fine-grained white crystalline stone that was selected for some of the most prestigious construction projects in American history, including the United States Capitol extension, the Lincoln Memorial, and the National Gallery of Art. The marble industry brought engineers, managers, and skilled craftsmen to Pickens County, and the professional families who settled in Jasper during the late 19th and early 20th centuries accumulated pre-1933 gold coins and pre-1964 silver coins in quantities that still surface in estate sales today. The Pickens County National Bank and other local institutions issued national bank notes that are actively collected by currency specialists.

The Etowah River runs through Pickens County and provided water power for early mills and later supported the county's agricultural economy. The mountain resort tradition took hold in Pickens County during the early 20th century as Atlanta families discovered the cooler temperatures and scenic beauty of the North Georgia foothills. Retirement communities and second-home developments followed the resort tradition, and the families who settled in Pickens County over multiple generations left estate collections that reflect both the marble industry wealth and the mountain farming heritage. Pre-1933 gold coins saved during the Depression era and pre-1964 silver coins accumulated through the mid-20th century are common finds in Pickens County estates.

Today, Jasper is a growing mountain community that serves as a gateway to the North Georgia highlands, and Pickens County continues to attract retirees and Atlanta commuters drawn by the scenery and quality of life. Knowledge of Numismatic Value

Most coin dealers and pawn shops pay only melt value. A true numismatist knows that a key date coin, a 1916-D Mercury Dime, or a 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent are worth far more than their metal content alone. We pay numismatic premiums on coins that deserve them.

Immediate Payment

You should never have to wait for your money. When you sell to Clemson Coins, you walk out with cash or check in hand the same day.

"JUST GO TO CLEMSON COINS! Hands down the BEST buyer for your jewelry & coins! I went to a few other places that were enroute to Clemson Coins — let's just say I was offered between 20% and 40% melt value at the other places. Within 5 minutes and no goofing around with acid tests (they have an XRF machine) I was offered more than a reasonable percentage of melt value from Clemson Coins. Don't get GOT at the other places! Worth the drive from Charlotte, NC if that tells you anything! Honest people are hard to find! I won't go anywhere else from now on!"
