Westminster residents searching for a coin dealer have a 20-minute drive and a significant payoff waiting in Pendleton. Clemson Coins is the highest-paying, most trusted and credentialed coin and gold dealer in the entire Upstate region.
Westminster sits in the Blue Ridge foothills of Oconee County, in a corner of South Carolina where the land rises toward the mountains and the history runs as deep as the soil. The town was incorporated in 1891 as a stop on the Blue Ridge Railroad, the same line that connected the isolated communities of upper Oconee County to the broader Southern economy in the post-Civil War era. The name Westminster was chosen by railroad officials, but the people who settled the surrounding countryside were anything but newcomers: the Scots-Irish and German families who had been pushing into this territory since the late eighteenth century had already built farms, churches, and communities across the foothills long before the railroad arrived. Oconee County itself was carved from the original Cherokee territory ceded in the treaties of the 1770s, and the settlers who followed those treaties into the backcountry brought with them a tradition of careful stewardship and long-term thinking that shaped everything from their farming practices to their approach to money and savings. The coins, gold, currency, and sterling silver that accumulated in Westminster-area households across the 1800s and early 1900s reflect that heritage: pre-1933 gold coins, pre-1864 silver coinage, old currency from Oconee County banks, and sterling flatware that has been with families for generations. The collections that surface from Westminster estates are consistently richer than sellers expect, precisely because the families who built this community understood the value of holding onto things that held their value.
The twentieth century brought modest but steady growth to Westminster as a small agricultural and light industrial community in the Oconee County foothills. The town's position near the Georgia border and along the main highway corridor made it a practical stopping point for commerce, and the families who built their lives here across the mid-century continued the tradition of accumulating tangible assets through every economic cycle. Pre-1964 silver coins saved from circulation, pre-1933 gold coins inherited from parents and grandparents, and gold jewelry passed down through families who understood that precious metals outlasted any paper currency were all common features of Westminster-area estates.
Today Westminster is experiencing a quiet but real transformation. Its position just off I-85 and within easy reach of Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, and the Chattooga River has made it increasingly attractive to retirees, outdoor enthusiasts, and buyers priced out of Greenville and Clemson. New residents are arriving with outside capital, and long-established Oconee County families are settling estates and discovering collections they had no idea were valuable. The combination of deep-rooted local families passing on accumulated wealth and a new wave of residents bringing fresh energy has made Westminster one of the more active estate markets in the Upstate.
That history of Scots-Irish and German settlers, of families who held onto gold and silver through every economic cycle, is exactly why Westminster-area estates consistently produce collections worth far more than sellers expect. Before you walk into any dealer, gold buyer, or pawn shop in the Westminster area, here is what you should know.
Credentials are not decorations. They represent vetted relationships with the grading services and trading networks that set the standard for fair pricing.
A pawn shop or gold buyer weighs your coin and pays for the metal. A real numismatist reads the coin. A 1921 Peace Dollar, a 1916-D Mercury Dime, or a 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent can be worth many times its melt value. We know the difference, and we pay accordingly.
When you sell to Clemson Coins, you walk out with cash or check in hand the same day. No waiting periods, no consignment arrangements, no uncertainty.
Clemson Coins has purchased collections ranging from a few hundred dollars to well over one million dollars. Oconee County estate attorneys, trust officers, and families with significant holdings know where to bring the big deals.
We purchase a wide range of coins, currency, precious metals, and jewelry. If you are not sure what you have, bring it in. We look at everything at no charge and with no obligation to sell.
$2.50, $5, $10, and $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens denominations.
All dates and grades, raw and slabbed. Key dates paid at full numismatic value.
All years, proof and bullion strikes, singles and monster boxes.
1909-S VDB, 1916-D Mercury Dime, 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, and more.
Bars, rounds, and all major mint brands at competitive premiums.
Large-size notes, silver certificates, nationals, and Confederate currency.
All karats, any condition. Rings, chains, bracelets, broken pieces welcome.
Any size, from $500 to over $1 million. We come to you for large estates.
From Westminster and Oconee County estates, we regularly purchase: pre-1933 gold coins, pre-1964 silver coinage, national bank notes from Oconee County banks, Confederate currency, and sterling silver flatware.
Many estates today also include American Silver and Gold Eagles in both mint state and proof examples, proof and mint sets, specialty sets, complete and partial sets of Indian Head cents, Lincoln cents, all dimes, quarters and half dollars, and of course Morgan and Peace dollars.
If you are working with an estate attorney or trust officer in Oconee County, we are happy to provide a written appraisal and work directly with counsel to facilitate a smooth transaction.

"I had a great experience at Clemson Coins, Currency, Bullion & Jewelry and highly recommend them to anyone looking to sell gold. I came in with an 18K gold necklace and honestly didn't know what to expect, but the whole process was smooth, and professional from start to finish. They weighed everything in front of me, and gave me a very fair price based on the current market. What really stood out was how respectful and straightforward they were. You can tell they value honesty and customer trust. I also compared offers, and theirs was one of the best in the area. If you're in the Clemson/Pendleton area and want a reliable place to sell gold, this is definitely the spot to go. I'd come back again without hesitation."

"After sending an email, regarding the sale of some personal coins, I was advised to come by the store. For those that seem upset about not getting 'ballpark' offers on the phone, let's be real. If you're not a professional, you can't possibly know what the owner is looking for. To spend hours on the phone, going over dates, condition, etc. Just stop in. The owner is very straight forward. He doesn't want to waste his time or yours. His offer was fair and quick. If you are trying to sell, then realize this is a business, for profit. It may not be top price, in your expectation, but it is top in resale. I will be returning for future endeavors. Thank you, Sir. I appreciate your time and fairness."

"My wife Michele and I stopped by on a whim and spoke with Joe the owner. First of all the shop is fantastic and well stocked with a variety of silver to numismatics. As for Joe and his staff. They were very friendly and knowledgeable. They just gained a customer for life. But who holds down the shop are the adorable Yorkies. We will definitely be back asap. Thank you the great experience. Butch"
Westminster customers regularly tell us they stopped at a local gold buyer first, received a number, then drove to Pendleton and walked out with significantly more. We hear that story every week.

Most coin dealers, pawn shops, and gold buyers in the Westminster area pay only melt value. Clemson Coins pays full numismatic value on coins that deserve it. We are PCGS, NGC, CAC, and CACG authorized dealers. An Oconee County family recently brought us a collection that a local buyer had offered melt value on: we identified several key-date coins and paid them considerably more on the spot.
